Beach Pea (Lathyrus maritima) 30 seeds
Adaptable, all pH tolerant, needs sun and well drained soil
Rare, difficult to find seed
This is an easily grown plant. Most often seen on ocean sand dunes, it can be a welcome addition to your landscape away from the shore.
How to grow:
Lathyrus maritima has a hard seed coat that can protect the seed for up to 5 years floating in the ocean. To speed germination, rub between two sheets of sandpaper, scratching the surface. Soak in warm water for 24 hours or until the seed swells and then plant into flats or in the garden.
Use this plant as you would with any annual pea. Young pods and shoots can be cooked or used raw in salads. Dried pea seed can also be cooked or the seed can be sprouted to be used on salads or sandwiches.
There is a caution on toxicity if your diet consists of more than 30% Beach Pea. Not likely in our opinion.
