Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostrboides) 30 Seeds
Mature Height/spread: 50-90 ft. high/ 15-25 ft. spread
Once thought to be extinct until a live specimen was discovered in China. Today, other than it being a very fun tree to have and enjoy, it is used to stabilize water edges, and can be trimmed as a tall hedge. With their extensive root systems, they would be a very reliable windbreak in areas at risk of strong weather. Dawn Redwood is a deciduous conifer. I looses it's needles for the winter.
Sow late winter in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the cold frame for their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
